If you like my work and want to follow me or support me:

Please subscribe to my newsletter, What’s Helping Today, now on beehiiv (previously on substack but no more so don’t subscribe on there).

You can also follow me on Bluesky.

If you’re new to my work, check out these “Starter Packs” with some links to my stuff, which I’ve curated depending on your interests …

I’m a freelance, independent journalist. If you want to help me continue doing what I do … please consider giving me some money via my “Buy Me a Coffee” virtual tip jar.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Please note: I do not respond to most email I receive and I haven’t for … many years now, for many reasons. Consider if you’d rather for example write into my advice column, which greatly increases the chances I might “respond” — albeit in a public way, and I won’t reprint your name. Or if you’d rather reach out about hiring me to consult or speak with you(r organization).

To ask me a question for potential consideration for my newsletter’s advice column, Dear Sandy, you can write to whatshelpingtoday at gmail dot com. (Do not write this address for other reasons; I will ignore.)

Here were the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth, sixth, and seventh installments of my Dear Sandy column.

Visit this page to learn more about hiring me potentially to speak for your organization. As I say there, contact either my speaking agent Leslie (linked above) or if applicable me directly (via the form below) and we can discuss your situation. Please put “Speaking” in your subject line; I’ll respond to you as soon as I can.

To contact me regarding potential consulting work, use the same form below. Please put “Consulting” in your subject line and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Note, my professional consulting services are only offered for media organizations interested in updating their mental health-related coverage … as well as mental health professionals themselves — of all sorts, including psychiatrists, therapists, social workers, EMTs, nurses, counselors, so on ...

I’m now formally offering such consulting after having been frequently been asked by media professionals (whose work touches on “mental health”), and various mental health professionals alike (broadly constituted), about how to better do their jobs since AKOMP first published. So 8+ years now.

Please find more information as well as many testimonials / fan mail from various mental health and media professionals, patients, their family and others here.

Note: Consulting-wise, I offer sliding scale rates, some pro bono work, and free 15-minute Zoom or phone calls to individuals/groups potentially interested in working with me. Reach out and we can discuss (again, use the form below and please put “consulting” in your subject line.

For my latest in search of’s — hiring and other-housekeeping-wise — please visit this page.

Right now (Updated 7/4/25): I’m still looking for a data journalist-type interested in co-bylining with me on whatever else I do create responsive to this pile of cis-allyship stories. All details here.

To all who applied to those previously listed three positions I was hiring for, if you haven’t heard from me already: Grateful to you, for applying. I’m just pausing all that for now. Sorting out some other logistics.

Thanks for your interest.
